Measuring indoor CO2 & air quality

CUSTOMER NEEDS
Fresh, clean air is a vital component of our ability to lead healthy and productive lives. Without fresh air, we are more susceptible to headaches, fatigue, and loss of concentration. This makes it harder for students to pay attention in class and feel engaged, causing learning to suffer. This is why it’s so important that classrooms are regularly ventilated. But when? How often? When it came to ensuring proper ventilation, teachers were in the dark as to what was going on inside their classrooms. A solution was needed to optimize this process.

SOLUTION
KCS TraceME was approached to develop a ‘smart’ and easy to implement air quality device. This device was to be equipped with environmental sensors which indicate when the air quality level in a classroom went below a certain quality threshold. This will generate a notification to inform the teacher that the air quality has deteriorated to a point where it’s time to open the windows and ventilate the room. When the CO2 level has improved to an acceptable level, the device will send another notification to indicate the window can be closed again.

BENEFITS
The benefits with this solution are multifold, and it is easily replicable for many kinds of buildings and offices. Firstly, we create an environment where kids and teachers can be sure to be inhaling clean air at all times. This is so important, especially when you are spending many hours in a small room, with many people close together. Secondly, during COVID, it became even more essential to take control of this issue, to prevent further spread of the disease particles. Lastly, during winter, heating bills can rack up quite high. If heat loss can be prevented by optimizing ventilation schedules, this results in reduced electricity bills, and a net benefit for Mother Earth.
